A few years ago, hip-hop star Wyclef Jean released a hit called “If I Was President.” It might be more than just a song now.

The singer is mulling a bid for the top job in Haiti, which is up for grabs in November. Asked about the possibility of running by CNN, he said he’s already filled out the paperwork.

“I can’t sing forever,” he said.

Then there was his family, which took to the press with its own statement Tuesday:

“Wyclef’s commitment to his homeland and its youth is boundless and he will remain the greatest supporter regardless of whether he is part of the government going forward,” the statement said.

“At this time, Wyclef Jean has not announced his intent to run for Haitian president. If and when a decision is made, media will be alerted immediately.”

Jean, 37, was born in Haiti, but became a household name during his long musical career after he immigrated to the U.S. He teamed up with Lauryn Hill and “Pras” Michel, a fellow Haitian, to found the trio The Fugees, whose album “The Score” sold nearly 20 million copies worldwide.

After the magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit on Jan. 12, Jean swung into action raising funds though his charity Yéle Haiti Foundation and traveling the world as a “roving ambassador” for the country in an effort to raise disaster awareness.

But his charity came under fire after Web site The Smoking Gun accused him of using money from the foundation for personal gain. Jean said he hadn’t.

The current government has also been battling criticism of late. President Rene Préval was recently blasted by U.S. Senator Richard Lugar who is questioning whether November’s election will be fair.

Jean plans to travel to Haiti this week where he’s bound to be pressed on his presidential plan—if there is one. He has until Aug. 7 to make the big decision.
